July 2016 Hero: Dorian Edwards, Firefighter

Why did you want to become a firefighter?

I learned early in my adulthood that I wasn't a person that wanted to sit at a desk all day. I always enjoyed being able to help people and looked for a new challenge. That's why I wanted to be a firefighter. We are asked to wear so many different hats. Every 24 hour shift that I work is unique. I never know what to expect. Most importantly, I wanted a career that I could be proud of.

Where do you work?

I work at the Central Station which is located at 624 Chester in Little Rock.

How long have you been in this field?

I have been a firefighter going on 2 years.

What is your favorite part of the job?

It's hard to pick one favorite thing. There is nothing like driving a fire truck with the sirens on in an emergency, or the adrenaline you get when that alarm goes off in the station. The most satisfying part of the job is making someone's bad day better by doing your job.

What was your scariest day on the job?

I haven't had my scariest day on the job yet. We go into dangerous situations all the time not always knowing what to expect. The extensive training that I have received from the fire department along with the confidence I have in the guys I work with allow me to just focus on doing my job.

What keeps you coming back day after day?

It helps that I only have to come back every 3rd day. Seriously though, it's the people I work with. They are my second family.

What is something that you are proud of?

I am proud to be a part of the crew I work with at my station, and I am proud to have the opportunity to serve the city of Little Rock.

If  you, were a superhero, what power would you have and why?

If I was a superhero I would definitely have to be Superman. I always thought it was cool to be able to fly.

As a child, what was your dream job?

As a child, I always wanted to be a professional athlete, firefighter or astronaut.

What do you hope to accomplish in the next ten years?

In the next 10 years I will be a captain with the fire department and maybe have a wife and children.

What advice would you give young children for the future?

Enjoy your childhood. Being an adult is not always fun. More importantly, dream big and don't be scared to follow your dreams.

Do you have any personal heroes?

Yes, I do have some personal heroes.  All the men and women that protect our country, my parents, Lois-Ann, and my favorite tennis player Rafa Nadal.

When did you start playing tennis?

I started playing tennis in high school, then stopped, and started back probably 5 years ago.

What is your favorite USTA League and/or USTA Tournament?

My favorite tournament is probably the LRRC Clay Court tournament. They have two tournaments a year on clay. I enjoy playing all the USTA Leagues. I like to compete, and I really don't have a favorite.
